Training

The Gay Officers Action League of New England (GOAL/NE) provides comprehensive training for police officers and other criminal justice professionals in an effort to enhance the knowledge of Gay, Lesbian, Bi-sexual, and Transgender (GLBT) issues and laws.

It is GOAL/NE’s mission to provide the most current law updates, statistics, and community concerns to enable each law enforcement officer and agency to better provide services to their respective communities and to provide a safe working environment for GLBT professionals within the agency. We provide the necessary tools to guide the student through Same Gender Domestic Violence, Bias Crimes, GLBT Community Issues, and GLBT Families. We facilitate this training by maintaining the highest level of instructors, derived from the community of openly GLBT criminal justice professionals.

The history of GOAL/NE’s diversity training dates back to the early 1990’s. We have trained officers in police academies across New England including such departments as the Massachusetts State Police, Connecticut State Police, Boston Police, Providence Police, MBTA Police, New Haven Police and other Massachusetts Criminal Justice Training Centers. The training has also been provided to numerous college campus police departments, probation departments and other higher learning communities.

In November 2004, GOAL/NE made history by brining the first ever GLBT issue related training to the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) at their 111th annual conference in Los Angeles. Only 14% of the thousands of training proposals submitted to the IACP were selected to be included at the conference; a statistic that vividly illustrates the magnitude of our training program. Presenting along with GOAL/NE was former Boston Police Commissioner Kathleen M. O’Toole, Los Angeles Police Chief William Bratton and Connecticut State Representative and Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee Michael P. Lawlor.

GOAL-NE is a very well-respected organization attempting to bridge the gap between police departments and the GLBT community. Our training offers information and resources that is community policing-based and is essential for every department as all agencies police the GLBT community.
